Ep 17: 6 Ways to Tell If You're Unemployable

I'm rather unemployable - yep. I'm partner-able, colleague-able, contractor-able, sharable, learnable, likable, and growable....I'm just not employable. And it doesn't mean you're a self-centered prick, but it might mean you have a polarizing personality. Those like myself don't work well within corporate structures, micro-management contexts, and cubicles like the ones in Office Space. We are compelled to unleash our individuality, to go against the grain, to shift the paradigm - and don't like people telling us what we can and cannot do (yucky!). The Unemployables can go on to achieve great feats, build empires, create works of art - but only with the joined efforts of those who are employable. The sooner one can notice how employable they are, the better off their career decisions will be going forward. I recognized how unemployable I was at age 24. Six years later, after many projects and relationships, I reflect on what I've learned since then. So I've came up with 6 ways to tell if you're unemployable too:

Ep 16: Why Everything You're Rejecting Matters

With each passing day, I'm dismissing several potentially awesome relationships. Declining hundreds of proposals to build incredible things. Rejecting countless offers to create memorable works of art. I'm saying no to infinite possibilities, by saying yes to only a few. Not just me - we all are. And it's why we must be excruciatingly selective about the people, projects and professions that are deserving of our time, efforts and energy.

Ep 15: Successful at Failing: Why We Need to Hurry Up & Slow Down

The Gen Y Ambitious Creative (usually associated with a heavy case of Type A syndrome) is a very stubborn breed of character. We believe that the rules don't apply to us. We commit to too many projects at once. We work tirelessly at building a legacy. Our best friends are usually our colleagues, partners and clients. We feel guilty when we go on vacations or extended time periods just being still. Meditation is calculus. Being spoiled feels yucky. Worst of all, we neglect nurturing our real relationships - the ones that matter most in the end. But wait, how did we get here?

Ep 14: 10 Things Designers Are Better At Than Artists

It's about that time for the companion piece to my last post entitled 10 Reasons Artists Are More Awesome Than Designers. (Hopefully not too many feathers were ruffled in the process.) Do keep in mind that I've been called both an artist and a designer. With one foot firmly planted on both grounds, it's only fair to play devil's advocate on this subject. Though I love being an artist, no one can deny the wonderful benefits one gets from being a designer. Let's dive right into 10 reasons why designers rule:

Ep 12: Your City Deserves a Better Class of Designer

Are you gonna give it to 'em?

This is the question I must constantly ask myself as an artist and creator. In fact, perhaps all of us designers should ask ourselves this question more often. As we sometimes can struggle with how to improve our craft in an extremely fast-paced world, I think we have to keep in mind what goes into producing betterment for ourselves, our clients, our colleagues, and our cities.

Ep 11: 5 Incredible Benefits of Mastering Detachment

The process of becoming detached from things you placed high amounts of value upon can be incredibly daunting. We can spend several years being content little pack rats, but really what we’ve really done is build our own prisons for which we are both the guards and the inmates. The things you own end up owning you - it’s true, I can attest. Until one day this past June, a single moment arrived where it made complete sense and I wasn’t afraid to let go of anything - anymore. My radical shift was instantaneous and absolute. Since then, I’ve witnessed first hand a heightened awareness - akin to leveling up in a video game. Feelings of accomplishment and nirvana.

Ep 10: Why I Turned Down $250/hr As a Graphic Artist

It's strange that just 6 months ago, the title of this post would've began with 'How I Earned...' instead of 'Why I Turned Down...' Things done changed, for sure. Plus, this could make for a far more interesting story, right? Why someone would say 'no' to this instead of 'hell yeah!' Well, in short, I turned this amount down to pursue 3 key assets in my professional life. But first, let me give you some context...

Ep 8: Turn Active Value into Passive Income

With only a handful of ways to truly become financially free, we've got to figure out which route works best for us. Some of us work hard and spend hard. Some of us are working on the next app that we hope will be acquired by an industry giant. Some of us are immensely talented, marketable and have connections. Some of us want to fly high yet still be under the radar. I might fall into the latter category. Here's why...

Ep 7: 4am Is the New 5am

For about the first 25 years of my life, I was never a morning person. Loved sleeping in on the weekends until noon, but getting up for work by 7am was a struggle. Like most guys in their late teens, I was a true night owl and my evenings were mainly about going to parties and clubs. Looking back, I wish I had spent more nights like Batman gliding off rooftops and beating criminals to a pulp - at least then, I would've been doing more good for my city! Anyway...it wasn't until a couple of years ago that I finally grasped the concept and value of being an Early Bird.
